422 ppm, 2024

422 PPM is the global atmospheric CO2 measure on Friday, Sept 13 2024, the day this piece came out of the kiln after its second and final firing at Taller Contorno, Mexico City. The safe upper limit of atmospheric CO2 is around 350 parts per millions (ppm) of CO2, a limit that was first breached in May 1986. The piece is a small memento to one of the most visible impacts of human-caused climate change, the destruction of forests and habitats by fire. It also serves as a reminder of the combustion and pollution involved in creating ceramics, something I strive to keep to a minimum by experimenting with sustainable practices and integrating them into my practice.
