Ark Encounter
In this installation, I subvert the myth of Noah's Ark, one of the founding myths of Western anthropocentrism. At the end of the Great Flood, God offers Noah and his family absolute control over all living species and the resources of the Earth. And wham, off we go for over 2,000 years of exploitation and despoiling of nature. The title comes from a creationist theme park in Kentucky where you can visit a life-size replica of Noah's Ark and "experience bible history". In my encounter with the Ark, Water flows from an inverted Legos pyramid and floods a house of cards of slate roof tiles precariously rising from the water. The boat contains the water rather than being carried by it, and performs a continuous cycle of flooding instead of any renewal of the species.
Materials: inflatable canoe, slate roofing tiles, Lego pieces, artificial grass, compressed air tubing, rope, reusable tie wraps, electric pump, epipremnum aureum, water.
Installation views at the exhibition DIY Flood, CIRCA Art actuel, May 6 - June 17 2023.
