Volcán, 2024
This volcano is small tribute to the Mexican landscape, where it was created. The country is traversed from east to west by the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, which includes several active volcanoes as well as the world's youngest volcano, the Paricutín, “born” in 1943. Volcanic and seismic activity is felt by humans in spectacular and sometimes deadly ways, bringing geology, otherwise perceived as a slow and distant process, down to a more human timescale. A ceramic volcano can also serve as a metonymy for ceramic creation itself, as the temperature inside an active volcano is of the same order of magnitude as in a ceramic kiln, somewhere between 800 and 1100 degrees Celsius. The volcano sits on a plate fitted with holes to let the air through as well as an incense burner.
